another anatomy scan

i drove 4 hours to my doctor's appointment today... i hope transferring all my records, and meeting with my new ob goes quickly. i cannot be driving this far for appointments! i'm exhausted.

when i got to the ultrasound place, i checked in, and took my seat. my name was called after a few minutes, and i rounded the corner to see the ultrasound technician. it was the lady who found Carli's hydrops; anita. i will never ever forget that woman.

i hadn't yet decided if i liked anita or not. i was thankful that she found the hydrops, as it wasn't very noticeable when she did find it. i didn't like her cold "all business" demeanor during Carli's scan, but then again... maybe it's just because she knew she was giving us a grim diagnosis. i hadn't yet figured anita out.

her attitude seemed the same. she didn't smile; seemed "all business". but, once she closed the exam room door, she began asking how things went with Carli. (i hadn't seen her since just after the diagnosis). i told her we lost Carli at 26 weeks. i was happy that she remembered me. it seems i'm usually easy to forget. :) she asked me a few questions about Carli, and whether we ever found the cause. even though she's not a particularly cheerful person, i felt like she really cared.

she explained that since Eden was too small at my last ultrasound, she had to get the measurements of her heart. but, just to make sure, she was going to double check the entire anatomy scan. she planned to re-do every single measurement, and go over it with me. as a mother who is super paranoid, this was a definite good thing for me.

as soon as she started the scan, she said "this baby does not have hydrops". wonderful words. she got all of the measurements, and we talked normal conversation about my move and her sister who used to live in pittsburgh. i have decided- i really do like anita. and i trust her ultrasound skills.

Eden measures exactly with her dates. she was 20 weeks 6 days and weighed 13 ounces. exactly where she should be. her brain, spine, and heart looked great. thank god for a normal pregnancy!!

after anita got all the necessary measurements, she held the probe to my stomach for a little while, and let me watch Eden moving around. we talked about how cute she was, and she sucked on her fingers.

Eden's hand got away from her, and we watched her open and close her mouth, and anita pointed out her little tongue that kept popping out, trying to catch her hand again. and then:
we got a picture of Eden giving us a "thumbs up".

it was a great ultrasound. i'm so happy my baby is healthy. i just couldn't stop smiling the whole drive back to my parents' house. :)

I'm from the July 2010 birth club and have been reading your blog ever since you found out Carli had hydrops. I feel a sort of attachment to you and am SO happy to see things going so well with this pregnancy :) I hope it continues this way for you and your family.
