we took Eden to the doctor today. 6 month check up. she was due for some shots, but that didn't happen. we will get to that in a minute. everything was healthy and normal (yay!) and Eden weighs 17 pounds 2 ounces. she's 26 inches long. (by the way, when do we get to start saying "tall" instead of "long"? i don't say "i'm 5 foot 5 inches long.")
her growth has kinda plateaued. she was usually in the 90th percentile. now she's 75th for everything. the doctor says that's normal. breastfed babies are chunky in the beginning, but they tend to slow down around 6 months. she says the charts are based on formula fed babies, and they are overweight at 6 months. i don't know if i believe that.
i think Eden's growth (weight) slowed down because we were traveling so much, and she didn't get to nurse as frequently as she likes to. if the formula fed thing is true, Eden should be bigger... because she got A LOT of formula over the past month or so. seriously, i was worried my milk would be gone. plus, she's crawling around now, instead of just laying like a bump on a log. she's getting more exercise. from my experience, babies slim down once they start moving.
either way, her growth is not a concern. she's just not as fat as she used to be. still healthy.
she didn't get to have her shots today, because the doctor's office is waiting for their vaccine shipment... or so they said. i have to call next week to make an appointment to come back for the shots.
when Eden was born, i didn't have insurance. Ray and i weren't married, so i wasn't covered under his insurance. i had a medical card. the medical card covered Eden too. after we got married, we put everyone on Ray's insurance. so, at the doctor today, we switched all the insurance information. we are no longer on medicaid (awesome!!).
when i got home, the doctor's office called. they said "we made a mistake. we do have the vaccinations... just not for the medicaid babies. we didn't realize you had insurance." seriously? they have vaccinations for the kids with insurance, but not the kids with medicaid? that is sooooo messed up. (i'm still making an appointment for later... we don't want to go back today.)
i've been telling Ray that doctors don't treat everyone the same (and it may be for billing purposes). i don't know if he fully believed me... but this proves it.
when i worked at my last job, we had to do medical billing. the clients with insurance could get away with murder. the clients with medicaid had to follow all the company's rules and policies, or they were dropped from our services. crazy how that stuff works...

I'm with you. My daughter is on state insurance (which we pay for - just not as much as my private insurance... which is $600 a month to add her... and she's healthy and it's STILL $600 a month) and I have had doctors tell me they aren't taking state insurance patients, or that we can or can't do this or that because of our insurance. They always make me feel sleazy because she's on state insurance. Sorry they made you feel bad :(
